Permanent exhibition on the city's history and special exhibitions
The Pirna Town Museum was founded back in 1861. This makes it one of the oldest town museums in Saxony! Today, the museum's collection includes more than 80,000 exhibits, of which around 300 are on display. But the most important exhibit is the museum itself, or more precisely, the place where it is located. The place where Pirna now explores and tells its history was once home to an important Dominican monastery. The influence of the order on the development of the town and region - particularly in the areas of education and care for the poor - was immense!
The monastery was secularised during the Reformation. From then on, the buildings were used for other purposes. Finally, in the 19th century, the town museum moved in. Since 1923, it has been displaying its collections in the sublime Gothic ambience of the former chapter house of the monastery.
In winter, concerts, lectures, mulled wine walks, puppet shows, readings and the traditional Advent carol singing of the Pirna Singing Circle take place in the hall. Special exhibitions showcase creative craftsmanship from Saxon Switzerland and the Eastern Ore Mountains.
