Short facts

The landmark above Pirna's old town

The former Sonnenstein fortress was first mentioned in a document in 1269 and has had an eventful history ever since. Over the centuries, the castle was a castle, a garrison, a sanatorium and a state-owned enterprise until it began to deteriorate more and more. Since 2011, the Saxon Switzerland - Osterzgebirge District Office has had its headquarters in the reconstructed castle complex.
The older part of the complex, the 18th-century bastions and fortifications, and the 19th-century terraced gardens are open to visitors. Guests can enjoy a charming view over Pirna to the Elbe valley and Dresden.
