Shop windows of small boutiques in the narrow lanes shed their warm light on the cobblestones, wet from sleet. Red and yellow Herrnhuter stars shine over romantic courtyards. In cosy cafés, chilly passers-by come together to have “a dessl haysn and a shdygl Ayershegge” which is the lovable local dialect’s expression for a cup of hot coffee and a piece of the typical Saxon version of a cheesecake: Pirna is Saxon cosiness carved into stone. The streets and buildings of the historic old town are witnesses to a time when pedestrians and horse-drawn carts set the pace of a town.
Pirna is almost 800 years old, a jewel on the Elbe River with each corner telling a chapter of this long and multi-facetted history. The place is small enough for a restful time off and big enough to offer year-round cultural, creative and culinary delights. As gateway to Saxon Switzerland Pirna is the ideal starting point for excursions to the surroundings. In a western direction, Dresden is just a stone’s throw away, eastward all the paths to the winter wonderland of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains are short.
