Rock gate "Kuhstall"

Short facts

  • Bad Schandau
  • Natural monument,…

The Kuhstall is the largest rock cave in Saxon Switzerland and especially worth a visit in winter

The imposing rock arch is 11 metres high, 17 metres wide and 24 metres deep. There are various explanations for the name "cowshed". For example, it is said that robber barons from Wildenstein Castle once hid their stolen cattle there. Another story tells that farmers brought their cows there to protect them during the Thirty Years' War.
The cowshed is particularly recommended in winter. The cool, clear air gives you sweeping views that you don't get in summer. With a bit of luck, the imposing rock gate itself is covered in a white blanket of snow

Winter hiking tip:Rundweg Lichtenhain

Caution, the cold air usually brings snow and slippery conditions, in these weather conditions it is advisable to rent ice skates - for example at the Bad Schandau tourist service.
