Richard Wagner Sites Graupa (Pirna)

Short facts

Music Museum: exhibitions, guided tours, events

The place where Wagner created the sketches for his opera "Lohengrin" during a summer holiday in 1846 is now home to a modern multimedia exhibition. The Richard Wagner Sites Graupa, which include the Graupa Hunting Lodge and the Lohengrin House, are dedicated not only to Wagner's time in Saxony, but also to his unique work.

Saxon Switzerland was not just a place of tranquillity and retreat for Richard Wagner. The grandiose and mystical landscape was also a source of artistic inspiration. From 1842 to 1849, the artist stayed in Dresden as Kapellmeister of the Saxon Court Orchestra. His proximity to Saxon Switzerland enabled him, an enthusiastic hiker, to make regular excursions there. Today, a museum worth seeing in Graupa and a monumental sculpture commemorate the artist's connection to the region.

In the summer of 1846, Richard Wagner and his wife Minna stayed at the Schäfer estate in Graupa for three months. He had retired to Saxon Switzerland to work on a new opera in peace and quiet. The composition became one of his most famous works: Lohengrin.

Today, the "Richard Wagner Sites Graupa" museum commemorates the famous guest's stay. A permanent exhibition on Wagner's stay here and the history of the creation of the opera "Lohengrin" can be seen in two museum rooms in the former Schäfer estate. It is the oldest authentic Wagner residence that is still used as a museum. In the nearby Graupa hunting lodge, visitors can immerse themselves in the life and work of the composer in a multimedia and interactive way. In keeping with tradition, the castle Christmas and Christmas matinee are held here during Advent and a New Year's Eve concert takes place on New Year's Eve.

Walk in Wagner's footsteps: This is possible in Liebethaler Grund, where the stage 1 of the long-distance hiking trail Malerweg Elbsandsteingebirge starts and where the largest Richard Wagner Museum in the world is located in a romantic spot. Especially in winter, hikers can experience here what Richard Wagner also sought and found in the Liebethaler Grund: silence.

Part of the exhibition is a holographic theatre in which the innovative staging techniques of his operas are illustrated. A virtual orchestra pit invites visitors to follow Wagner's pieces note by note and visualises every active orchestral instrument. Many other interactive features ensure that you get a vivid impression of how Wagner worked.
