Napoleon redoubt (Hohnstein)

Short facts

  • Hohnstein
  • Historical site,…

The Napoleon Redoubt is a contemporary testimony to the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation of 1813-1815.

The Napoleon entrenchment is located on the Schanzberg, south-east of Hohnstein. In 1813, after his defeat in the Russian campaign of 1812, Napoleon planned to push back the Russian allies of Prussia with new troops. In order to secure the important transport routes to Bohemia, several field fortifications were built by the local population, including the Napoleonschanze. This had three gun emplacements. However, the battles in the region between Upper Lusatia and Saxon Switzerland were extremely costly. Napoleon's defeat was ultimately sealed by the Battle of Leipzig in August 1813, after Austria had allied itself with the Russians and Prussians.

The Napoleon Redoubt offers an impressive panoramic view. The hilly countryside around Hohnstein stretches out to the north-west. Two lovingly designed rest areas invite you to take a relaxing look back at the historical events. An information board provides a brief historical outline. There is also the opportunity to end long hikes in a cosy atmosphere at a fireplace.
