Exhibition Sculpture Summer Pirna

Short facts

Symbols in stone

Every year, an art exhibition takes place on the Sonnenstein high above the town of Pirna, which is probably unique in its kind. Below the castle, in the bastions of the former fortifications, there is an exciting interplay of colossal defence architecture and figurative art.
In honour of the 300th birthday of the painter Bernardo Bellotto, gen. Canaletto (1722 - 1780), the Pirna Sculpture Summer is showing "Symbols in Stone". Thanks to the Pirna Sandstone Works, the Zwingerbauhütte Dresden and sixteen contemporary sculptors from Germany, original baroque works such as putti and mythological figures are juxtaposed with contemporary stone sculptures. This creates particularly appealing lines of tension between the sculptures, but also deep symbols that illuminate the external appearances and the inner essence of being human.
With works from the Dresden Zwinger by Paul Egell, Christian Kirchner, Johann Joachim Kretzschmar, Balthasar Permoser and others.
Participating artists: Lothar Beck, Marguerite Blume-Cárdenas, Ralf Ehmann, Konstanze Feindt Eißner, Ursula Güttsches, Knut Hüneke, Matthias Jackisch, Susanne Knorr, Peter Makolies, Emerita Pansowová, Joachim Sauter, Michael Schoenholtz, Klaus Schwabe, Jörg Steinert, Bernd Stöcker, Werner Stötzer.
