Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland is one of the most spectacular hiking areas in Europe. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains, as the region with the bizarre sandstone rocks is also called, is our ‘hiking home’. Almost every free weekend, we are drawn to the Upper Elbe Valley. We know many of the paths here, but there is always something new to discover. What makes hiking here an unforgettable experience is the natural diversity. The most diverse landscapes come together in a very small area: freestanding rock formations, huge table mountains, deep gorges and green river valleys. We discover the ‘International Park’ off the beaten tourist track and also cross the famous Malerweg (Painters' Way).

We will be accompanied by a national park guide who fell in love with the area more than 40 years ago and turned his passion into a career. After hiking, you can relax in the Geibeltbad in Pirna (which has a very good sauna) or in the Toskana Therme in Bad Schandau and recharge your batteries for the next (hiking) day.

Tour description

  • Day 1: Individual journey to Pirna
  • In the evening, welcome at the Hotel Pirn'scher Hof, in the historic old town of Pirna.
  • Day 2: Rugged and lovely - wild rocky world in the Schmilka area (approx. 12 km, approx. 4 h)
  • From the Elbe we hike through natural mixed forests and the Schmilka rock basin to the Großer Winterberg. On a clear day, we are rewarded with magnificent views as far as the Dresden Frauenkirche, the peaks of the Eastern Ore Mountains and the Bohemian Central Mountains. On the hike, we enjoy spectacular views of the Schrammstein range and learn about the legends of the region.
  • Day 3: The Wehlener Acht and the Bastei (approx. 15 km, approx. 5.5 h)
  • Today we embark on a challenging circular hike on little-used paths through steep gorges and on panoramic mountain trails around the town of Wehlen. Part of the trail leads through the core zone of the national park. We learn about the park's special need for protection. We also visit one of the tourist highlights: the Bastei Bridge.
  • Day 4: Schauenstein Castle and the mysterious mill (approx. 13 km, approx. 5.5 h)
  • Today we visit the Czech side of the International Park. From Rainwiese (Mezni Louka) we hike to the ‘Little Prebisch Gate’. From here we continue to Schauenstein Castle. The castle was built in the 14th century to protect trade routes. It was later used by robber barons. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of Bohemian Switzerland. From the rock castle, we continue our hike to the Grundmühle mill in the romantic Kamnitzklamm gorge, continuing past the
  • past the Zamecek hunting lodge back to Rainwiese.
  • Day 5: Free day
  • Today we take a break from hiking. You can go on your own hikes in the surrounding area, visit Dresden or Prague, take a steamboat or canoe trip on the Elbe or enjoy the day at the Toskana thermal spa in Bad Schandau.
  • Day 6: In the Kirnitzschtal valley (approx. 15 km, approx. 5.5 h)
  • Neumannmühle, situated on the bubbling Kirnitzsch, is our first destination for the day. The mill is also one of the stages of the famous Malerweg trail. We continue along wild mountain paths to the Frienstein, which is also very popular with climbers. We continue to the mill in Schmilka. Here, fresh, fragrant bread is being taken out of the oven and home-brewed beer is being served - we'd better hurry!
  • Day 7: To the roof of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (approx. 15 km, approx. 5.5 h)
  • To round off the day, there is perhaps the most beautiful hike on the Hoher Schneeberg in Bohemia. At 723 metres, it is the highest peak in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and is easily recognisable thanks to its striking shape. The observation tower, which was built in 1864, offers a wide panoramic view. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Jizera and Giant Mountains.
  • Day 8: Individual return journey
  • It's time to say goodbye. Prague and Dresden are of course always worth a visit.
