The guided hiking tour of the Dresden Elbe Valley and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains takes us to the pearls of this diverse region.

Saxony is not only the easternmost wine-growing region in Germany, but also the smallest. It extends from Dresden-Pillnitz to Meissen. Pillnitz is best known for its castle, which Augustus the Strong had rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century according to his own ideas. Many small winegrowers also cultivate their vines here. Along the Dresden Wine Trail, we walk with a view of the Elbe Valley to Graupa and have the opportunity to visit the Richard Wagner Museum. During his time as Saxon court music director, he composed large parts of Lohengrin here. From the heights above Graupa, you can already see Saxon Switzerland. On three hikes, we get a small glimpse of the beauty of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. One of our destinations is the Bastei, the region's most famous rock formation. Before the Romantics discovered this place for themselves, robber barons used to operate here.

In Meissen, we always walk with a view of the Albrechtsburg Castle, which proudly towers over the old town of Meissen, along the Saxon Wine Trail. Its stately appearance bears witness to the great importance that the castle has had for the city and the country for a long time.

Tour description

  • Day 1: Individual journey to Dresden
  • In the evening, welcome at the ParkInn Hotel Dresden, located between Neustadt and the historic city centre.
  • Day 2: Panoramic tour in Bohemian Switzerland (approx. 14 km, approx. 4.5 h)
  • The tour starts and ends in Hrensko/Herrnskretschen in Bohemian Switzerland. We walk along an old church path through the forest to the neighbouring village of Janov/Jonsdorf. From the observation tower there, we enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the table mountains of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. We reach the Hutberg with its striking vantage point along scenic paths. On the way, we encounter numerous traces of the former inhabitants of the vanished Sudetenland. Our hiking stage ends at the lovingly reconstructed church in Ruzova/Rosendorf. And as befits a Bohemian village, there is an inn directly opposite the church. With a bit of luck, we can enjoy the wait there before the bus takes us back to Hrensko.
  • Day 3: Meissen, the castle, wine and porcelain (approx. 11 km, approx. 4 h)
  • We take the S-Bahn to Meissen. We walk from the Ratsweinberg to Proschwitz Castle, the oldest private winery in Saxony. We then descend through the vineyards to Benno-Kanzel, the ruins of the monastery ‘Zum Heiligen Kreuz’, one of the oldest monasteries in Saxony. We continue to Albrechtsburg Castle. The castle complex, first mentioned in 968, is considered to be the oldest castle building in Germany and is one of the most famous late Gothic architectural monuments, after which we stroll through the alleyways of the picturesque old town before stopping for a bite to eat
  • Day 4: The Great and Small Bastei (approx. 10 km, approx. 4 h)
  • From Stadt Wehlen we hike leisurely along the Uttewalder Grund. At the entrance to the Devil's Chamber, we descend through the eerily beautiful gorge into the Wehlener Grund. Passing an ice-age whirlpool at Höllengrund, we reach the Stone Table on unspoilt paths. From there, it is only 15 minutes to the famous Bastei Bridge. There we take in the breathtaking views before descending via the Schwedenlöcher to the Amselsee lake in the spa town of Rathen.
  • Day 5: Free day
  • Today we take a break. You can go on your own hikes in the surrounding area, visit the highlights of Dresden or travel to Prague or Leipzig. A steamboat trip on the Elbe is also a special experience.
  • Day 6: On electoral hunting and royal wine trails (approx. 12 km, approx. 4 h)
  • The tour begins and ends in Dresden-Pillnitz. We experience the special features of an inner-city nature reserve on historic hunting trails and the magic of the Pillnitz vineyards. In the garden of the Graupa hunting lodge, we marvel at some 400-year-old oak trees and the life of the master of musical art, Richard Wagner. On the way, we will encounter wineries and, with a little luck, we will be able to taste the fine grape juice directly from the producer. At the end of the tour, we have the opportunity to visit the well-tended grounds of Pillnitz Palace.
  • Day 7: Sandstone and chocolate (approx. 10 km, approx. 4 h)
  • The tour leads along largely unspoilt paths past the Großer and Kleiner Bärenstein to the Götzingerhöhle cave and Thürmsdorf Castle with its neighbouring chocolate factory. At the Malerweg chapel, we enjoy the legendary Thiele view of the Lilienstein and Königstein Fortress. We round off our tour with a panoramic view from the Rauenstein before returning to the railway station.
  • Day 8: Individual return journey
  • It's time to say goodbye or you can extend your stay in Florence on the Elbe. Nearby Prague or Leipzig are of course always worth a visit.
