Tour description

  • Day 1: Individual journey to Bad Schandau
  • You travel individually to Bad Schandau. If you arrive early, you can already hike a round tour from/to Bad Schandau on the day of arrival
  • Day 2: Round trip from/to Bad Schandau (approx. 9 or 13 km depending on the route)
  • The hike on the Malerweg begins in Bad Schandau and leads via Ostrau to the Schrammsteine and over the Affensteine to the Kirnitzschtal. The historic tram takes you comfortably through the Kirnitzschtal valley back to Bad Schandau.
  • Day 3: Bad Schandau - Hohnstein (approx. 11 km)
  • From Bad Schandau there is a short transfer (approx. 8 minutes) by minibus to the starting point of your family hike on the Malerweg. From Kohlichtgraben you reach the small mountain village of Waitzdorf via Mühlgraben. Before climbing the Brand, you first have to cross the wild and romantic ‘Tiefe Grund’. You will be rewarded with a fascinating view from the garden restaurant of the ‘Brandbaude’. The Malerweg follows the Brandstraße to the small town of Hohnstein, which is famous for its hand puppets with wooden heads.
  • Day 4: Hohnstein - Rathen spa town (approx. 9 km)
  • The Malerweg trail leads down into the lovely Polenztal valley and up to the Hockstein viewpoint. After the descent to Amselfall, the very entertaining trail leads through the picturesque Schwedenlöcher gorge to what is probably the most spectacular view in Saxon Switzerland - the Bastei. The descent leads over the Bastei Bridge to the small town of Rathen on the banks of the Elbe, and a visit to the world's largest garden railway complex ‘Eisenbahnwelten Rathen’ (Rathen Railway Worlds) directly on the banks of the Elbe is not only worthwhile for model railway fans.
  • Day 5: Rathen spa town - Königstein / Rathen spa town (approx. 9 km)
  • In the morning you cross the Elbe on the yaw rope ferry and climb up to Weißig. After a relaxed hike, you will soon reach Thürmsdorf. If you like sweets, you shouldn't miss a visit to the chocolate factory right next to Thürmsdorf Castle. You should definitely plan to spend the whole afternoon visiting (conquering) Königstein Fortress. There are numerous historical buildings, curiosities and exciting exhibitions to discover on the almost 10-hectare rocky plateau. Walk to Königstein and take the S-Bahn back to Rathen.
  • Day 6: Rathen spa town / Königstein - Gohrisch (approx. 8 km)
  • Take the S-Bahn to Königstein. From the small village of Königstein, climb up to the Quirl and the Pfaffensteine plateau. From the famous rock needle ‘Barbarine’ you have a magnificent view over the national park and the realm of stones.
  • Day 7: Spa town of Gohrisch - Bad Schandau (approx. 9 km)
  • The Malerweg leads past the Friedenslinde and the Gohrischfels to the Papststein. After descending to Papstdorf and continuing through Kleinhennersdorf, you reach Krippen. After a few metres, the wide view of the Elbe and Bad Schandau opens up before you.
  • Day 8: Individual departure from Bad Schandau
