Great Moments on the Malerweg Trail

Walking on the Malerweg Trail means encountering Saxon Switzerland’s most stunning sceneries and dramatic natural backdrops. The historic trail itinerary was revived in 2006. Here we suggest particular highlights and points of interest for the most breath-taking moments.

The Malerweg Trail in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is a 116-kilometre-long declaration of love for one of Europe's most spectacular natural landscapes.  Romanticist artists were the first to enthuse over the beautiful wild scenery in the Saxon-Bohemian border region. They returned here again and again to observe, draw and paint. Their favourite places and the paths leading there merged into an ideal route. Today's Malerweg Trail largely follows this historic itinerary. It is thus a piece of art history.

Culinary delights along the Malerweg trail

Hand-crafted chocolate, candy and beer are the little dainties right along the trail enjoying your brain’s reward centre. Apart from that, you are very welcome to stop in one of the traditional mountain inns or cosy cafés.
