Spa and Health resorts

A National Park region with spa tradition

© Achim Meurer

There are four health resorts in Saxon Switzerland that combine classic spa traditions with modern health and well-being ideas.

Wonderful nature, clear air and the discovery of healing sources led to a rapid development of the spa industry in Saxon Switzerland in the 19th century. This great health resort tradition still today ensures the guarantees for the high quality treatments offered here.

The traditional twin health resort Berggießhübel-Bad Gottleuba lie where Saxon Switzerland and the Eastern Ore Mountains merge and are embedded in the idyllic valley of the Gottleuba Stream. The original mud spa of Bad Gottleuba and Saxony’s first Kneipp health resort Berggießhübel united in 1999 to form the town of Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel. To this day, there are two traditional rehab clinics and spas providing everything for a fast and sustainable regeneration and rehabilitation. Hiking, for instance on Forellensteig Trail or to a nearby water reservoir, provides active recreation. Regular cultural events or a session in the salt barn or at the underground lake in Marie-Luise-Stolln Museum Mine wrap up your time-off in this twin health resort.

Bad Schandau, a health resort in the Kneipp tradition is located in the heart of Saxon and Bohemian National Park region and is surrounded by bizarre cliff tops, unspoilt woods and romantic natural brooks. State-approved as an official health resort as early as in 1800, Bad Schandau is the region’s oldest spa. Even during Sebastian Anton Kneipp’s lifetime (1821-1897) a spa facility here provided treatments according to his methods. In 1920, Schandau was allowed to add the official title “Bad” (bath or spa) to its place name and in 1926 the town was awarded the official title of a “Kneippkurort” (Kneipp Health Resort). Today, Bad Schandau boasts of two rehab clinics and excellent spa hotels. With its idyllic location at the Elbe River it is considered a hotspot of health and spa applications in Saxon Switzerland.
