Easy yet scenic tour from the spa town of Rathen via the foot of the Rauenstein to Stadt Wehlen.
Rathen health resort, Oberrathen parking lot
Town of Wehlen, OT Pötzscha
The hike begins at the parking lot in Oberrathen on the left bank of the Elbe. After crossing the level crossing, we follow the path marked "Roter Strich" (red line) on a white background and head uphill to the Laase. This plateau offers an impressive view of the Bastei massif with the Bastei bridge. Continue along the same markings until you reach the ascent to the Rauenstein.
In dry weather - without ice and snow - this tour can be done via the Rauenstein ridge path. This is more scenic and more challenging, as it partly leads over ladders than the path described here.
However, as we are assuming a winter hike, which also requires winter weather, we stay below the Rauenstein and turn right at the next fork in the path. When the "Roter Strich" markings branch off to the left, we follow the path straight ahead. Once we reach the Wehlen district of Pötzscha, the question remains: how do we get back to Rathen?
Option 1: Take the S-Bahn to one stop
Option 2: Walk along the Elbe cycle path to Kurort Rathen (approx. 4 km)
Approach on the B172 federal highway towards Bad Schandau - in Pirna-Sonnenstein follow the signs towards Kurort Rathen - continue via Struppen, Thürmsdorf, Weißig to Kurort Rathen
