We start in Hohnstein at the market and follow the yellow line (Pechhüttenweg) below the market in a northerly direction through the town. Soon we enter the forest and walk along the slope on the Kälbersteig. After a while we come to a small stream, turn left and walk down into the Polenztal valley (yellow line). We come to the Polenztal road, turn left here (red dot) and walk along the road for a while to the next crossroads. Turn right, cross the bridge and immediately turn left again (red dot).
Continue along the Polenz River until you reach the Polenztal Inn. Shortly after the inn, turn left and walk up the Schindergraben (blue line, diagonal green line). On the way, we pass the remains of the former bear garden.
The remains of the wall were originally part of a bear kennel, built for breeding and caring for bears that were used for hunts at the Saxon court - in the residential town, in the castle courtyard, on the Old Market Square and in the Grosssedlitz Garden. Bears broke out again and again. The garden existed until 1756.
At the top, we keep to the left, pass the remains of the walls of the bear garden again and finally reach the first houses of Hohnstein. At the next fork in the road, we turn left and walk uphill to the market square.
