The circular tour starts at the market square, which is unusually shaped like a triangle. You pass a historic post office column and follow the route marked with a red line up to the church and the town hall. The route continues slightly uphill to "Rotes Vorwerk", a farm with its own cheese dairy.
Soon you reach the ridge of the eastern Ore Mountains and turn left towards Berthelsdorf, passing a "Martersäule". A plaque describes the legend associated with it. The view from here into the Ore Mountains and Bohemia is fantastic. In the Landgasthof Berthelsdorf, two landladies serve real home cooked meals with ingredients from the garden as well as fresh eggs and meat from the farm. A playground next door offers variety for children.
Now the path leads downhill back to Liebstadt and Kuckuckstein Castle. Kuckuckstein was built in the mid-16th century and has seen many owners come and go. Napoleon was once a guest here. A few times, Kuckuckstein played a role on television, e.g. in the film version of Snow White and Rose Red produced in 2015. Past the castle, the trail descends on narrow paths into the valley and back to the starting point.
