The starting point is the Porschdorf bus stop or the car park at Polenztal in Porschdorf. This is where our trail (blue line) begins into the Tiefen Grund. The path winds along the Tiefen Grundbach stream, sometimes up a little and then down again to the stream. Later we turn left and hike (blue line) up the fire steps. About 850 steps and 150 strenuous metres of altitude lie between the Tiefen Grund near Porschdorf and the rock plateau high above. This area has been called the "Brand" since the plateau, along with the surrounding forests, was in flames in the 18th century. We hike along historical paths. The Brand Steps are part of the classic route of the Malerweg through Saxon Switzerland. Artists were attracted by the dramatic nature of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains: bizarre rock sculptures, gorge-green gorges and sublime table mountains left deep impressions and as a result, works just like them were created.
After the ascent, we continue towards Brandbaude - here we stand at the edge of the slope. As if on a balcony, only the railing separates us from the land, the Table Mountains in the distance and the deep canyon of the Polenz below us. The Brandaussicht is one of the most beautiful views in Saxon Switzerland. The historic ensemble of the Brand-Baude consists of a restaurant, accommodation and National Park information point.
From here we walk a short distance along the Brandstraße (blue line) and soon turn left, following the red line markings down the Schulzengrund, into the Polenztal valley. In the valley we turn left (red dot) and stay on the river side to get back to the starting point.
