On this entertaining hike, which is more like a walk, you will get to know the historical side of Pirna in the footsteps of the two great painters Bernardo Bellotto and Caspar David Friedrich.The market square in Pirna, with its lovely cafés and restaurants, is the starting and finishing point of this circular walk. You walk eastwards along Kirchgasse, where you can marvel at the beautiful entrance portal of St Mary's Church and, a little further on, both the Teufelserker and a drinking fountain.Continue along the historic pavement up to the Schlossberg, where Sonnenstein Castle stands high above the town. From up here, you have a marvellous view of Pirna and can even see as far as Dresden in good weather. From here, the Canaletto Trail (red "C" on a yellow background), as part of the 8th stage of the Malerweg, continues eastwards along the old fortress walls. Here you will find information boards about the historical events surrounding the "Sonnenstein". After the descent down to the Elbe (marked Malerweg), the trail now leads westwards along the banks of the Elbe again. The former location of the Pirna Elbe Gate, which both artists used as a motif for their paintings, is located approximately at the ferry landing stage. If you follow the path from here and then turn left into Dohnaische Straße and Grohmannstraße, you will reach the Klosterhof.
