Pirna
The gateway to Saxon Switzerland
Pirna is nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Elbe valley, between Dresden and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The romantic town with its historic centre is considered the gateway to Saxon Switzerland.
Largely spared war damage and city fires, there are still squares in the historic old town whose silhouette has been preserved over centuries, such as the market square. The paintings of the Venetian Bernardo Bellotto, known as Canaletto, made Pirna world-famous. And even today, a discovery tour through the medieval town centre with its winding alleys, proud town houses, charming backyards and numerous fountains is worthwhile.
The town of Pirna offers a wide range of cultural and leisure activities with events in the Herderhalle, the Q24, the Pirna museums and the Zuschendorf country palace with its famous camellia collection. In addition, sports and leisure facilities, such as the Geibeltbad, attract visitors to the town.
The Elbe Cycle Route, the Saxon Wine Route and the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail are ideal for excursions from Pirna.
