Grit Lemke "Her name is Hanka" - film and discussion with the author and director
Home: Lusatia. As the first feature film about, by and with Sorbs, BEI UNS HEISST SIE HANKA goes on a foray through the easternmost edge of Germany.
Disenfranchised for centuries and finally officially recognized as an ethnic minority, many Sorbs today are searching for their own and collective identity. Embedded in the picturesque nature of Lusatia, the documentary accompanies Sorbian existences in the here and now. From progressive artists and tradition-conscious young farmers to intellectual poets, the Sorbian community's life plans could not be more different. Yet they are united - in language, culture and the struggle for the reawakening of the Sorbian idea.
In her documentary film BEI UNS HEISST SIE HANKA, director Grit Lemke sets out on the trail of their Sorbian roots. What begins as a search for origins, mother tongue and belonging becomes a very personal and intimate insight into the traditions, traumas and dreams of a people. A journey as unique, beautiful and enchanted as a homeland whose valleys, forests and rivers seem inextricably linked to the people who have shaped this landscape.
