Two stepsisters live with their mother in a small town. One is industrious, the other lazy. One day, the industrious one drops her spindle down the well while spinning. Her nasty mother orders her to get it out again. In desperation, Marie jumps into the well and drowns?
No, miraculously she ends up in the garden of Mother Hulda, who takes her into her service and gives her rich gifts in return. When Marie returns home after some time, adorned with gold and jewelry, her envious sister wants to do the same. But something goes wrong...
